Customer Experience
Boise Co-op Market isn't your average grocery store. Since 1973, this community-owned institution has championed local farmers, makers, and better food while giving Boise a different way to shop. With two Treasure Valley locations and a fiercely loyal following, the Co-op has built its reputation on something bigger than what's on the shelves: a belief that where we shop, what we eat, and who we support matters.
The Opportunity
Boise Co-op Market has spent decades building something most grocery stores can only dream of: genuine community loyalty. But as the brand evolved, its physical spaces in Boise and Meridian needed to evolve with it.
The challenge wasn't simply to update signage. It was to bring Boise Co-op's personality, values, and local roots to life across two very different retail environments—without losing the warmth and familiarity that made people love it in the first place.
We needed to create a cohesive, flexible system that could do the practical work of a grocery store while making the experience feel unmistakably Boise Co-op Market.
GROCERY STORES AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE THIS MUCH PERSONALITY. GOOD THING THE CO-OP ISN'T LIKE MOST GROCERY STORES.
The Solution
Turn the store into the story.
Rather than treating signage as a collection of wayfinding tools and promotional messages, we saw an opportunity to make the entire shopping environment an extension of the brand.
Our approach brought together bold typography, expressive color, natural materials, and messaging with personality. Every touchpoint had a job to do, whether helping shoppers navigate the store, spotlighting local producers, or reminding members what makes Boise Co-op Market different.
The goal was a system that felt as thoughtful as the products on the shelves, as welcoming as the people behind the counters, and as proudly local as the community that owns it.
The Work
A brand brought to life. Down every aisle.
Working across Boise Co-op Market’s North End and Village locations, we translated its refreshed identity into a cohesive environmental design system. The result balances practical retail needs with unexpected moments of storytelling, personality, and local pride.
Local legends deserve the spotlight.
Boise Co-op Market’s commitment to local goes well beyond stocking Idaho-made products. We created dedicated Local Legends features to celebrate the farmers, producers, and makers behind them—giving shoppers a stronger connection to the people and stories behind what they buy.
Built to work. Designed to evolve.
Good design has to do more than look good. We developed modular community, member services, and HR boards that make everyday information easier to share and update without sacrificing brand consistency.
Natural materials, including wood, corrugated metal, custom slat walls, and dimensional elements, brought warmth and texture to the spaces while creating a durable system suited to busy retail environments.
Rooted in the neighborhood.
At the North End location, we extended the experience beyond the store walls. A refreshed awning and hand-painted murals put Boise Co-op's values front and center with messages celebrating local food, community ownership, and its roots dating back to 1973.
Working with local painter Jay Smith, we helped create an exterior that feels like it belongs to the neighborhood—not just another storefront competing for attention.
More than a fresh coat of paint.
Makes the brand tangible.
Translates Boise Co-op's values and refreshed identity into an immersive, recognizable in-store experience.
Puts local front and center.
Gives regional farmers, makers, and community ownership a more visible role in the shopping experience.
The result is a shopping experience at Boise Co-op Market that feels a little less like running errands and a lot more like being part of something.
